01.2006 - Peter DiMaggio Named Principal of Weidlinger
DiMaggio has led a variety of projects in the U.S. and overseas. He is currently working on two historically significant projects: a U.S. embassy on Pariser Platz in Berlin next to the Brandenburg Gate and a University of Virginia academic building.
NEW YORK - Weidlinger Associates has named Peter DiMaggio a principal of the firm. DiMaggio is a nationally recognized expert in special structures and protective design. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the Structural Engineers Association of New York and is co-chairman of their Codes and Standards committee.
Since joining Weidlinger in 1994, DiMaggio has been the lead designer on more than 30 projects that include embassies, educational facilities, hotels, office buildings, stadiums, and tall buildings. He advocates a diversified practice, demonstrated by his current projects that range from a very slender residential Manhattan high-rise to an academic building on the historic grounds of the University of Virginia. His list of recent projects includes two large FBI office buildings in Newark, NJ, and Washington, DC, the U.S. Embassy in Moscow, completed in 2000, and an award-winning Technical Center for Valeo in Michigan.
DiMaggio is also the lead engineer for the U.S. Embassy Complex in Berlin, now under construction, and continues to manage many design-build projects for the Department of State in Asia, Africa, and Europe. Among the unique smaller structures he has designed are an “architectonic parasol” atrium roof and a curved cantilevered blue glass staircase for an expansion of the Asia Society Museum and a round stainless steel communications station for securing the new gateway to Lehman College.
Tod Rittenhouse, director of Weidlinger’s buildings practice in New York, was enthusiastic about his nomination of Mr. DiMaggio to become principal: “Peter is a highly skilled engineer and a great role model. He has abundant energy and integrity, and has mentored many of the firm’s most promising young engineers. His expertise rests on a very broad base of engineering excellence and respect for aesthetics, sustainability, and cost control.”
Mr. DiMaggio is licensed as a Professional Engineer in NY, NJ, VA, PA, and CT. He received MS and BS degrees in Civil Engineering and a BA degree in the Humanities from Columbia University, New York, where he was an All-America soccer player.
