US Department of the Interior Building Modernization

Blast consultant for upgrade to determine blast loads, select among window retrofit options, and determine performance and submission standards for product to be installed. 1,300,000 sf.

Since 2002, the 1930's Department of the Interior building has been undergoing a major modernization, including a blast upgrade of the facade. Weidlinger Associates’ blast consulting and design services to the US government include development and implementation of the retrofit plan to upgrade the original windows of the 1.3 million-square-foot building. The windows are framed in wood within the limestone facade and backed by masonry wall construction. As the building is a historic structure, the exterior appearance cannot be altered. Weidlinger’s tasks include advising the GSA on selection of a retrofit plan, calculating the blast environment, determining the performance and testing requirements for the window upgrade, and providing consulting and review services throughout construction.
