University of Vermont - Given Building Skylight Roof
Skylight roof enclosure consisting of series of tied arches to cover 11,000-square-foot interior courtyard, for temporary housing of medical library. 11,000 sf.
As part of a major expansion of the Fletcher Allen Hospital at the University of Vermont, Weidlinger Associates designed a 3D roof enclosure for the open interior courtyard of the Given Building. The purpose of the enclosure was to provide temporary housing for the University of Vermont Medical School Library. The skylight structure consisted of a series of tied arches made up of curved 14-inch-diameter pipes and 2-inch-diameter tension rods. It spanned 75 x 150 feet, creating an enclosed space of more than 11,000 square feet. Bands of standard deck roofing were used to line the longitudinal edges; the finish material was glazing. The erection of the roof arches, including all secondary cabling, took less than two weeks.
