Stapleton Homeport Pier - FDNY Marine Company 9 Firehouse
Civil and structural engineering for new on-pier firehouse elevated one foot above the pier deck. NYC Public Design Commission award.
Weidlinger Associates provided civil and structural design engineering services to the NYC Economic Development Corporation for the construction of an on-pier FDNY firehouse located in the Stapleton section of Staten Island. The building resulted from a proposed realignment of neighboring Front Street, which remapped the roadway through the existing firehouse location. Extensive research was performed to determine the location of existing utilities within the pier and to assess the structural integrity of the pier. The design scope included installation of a sanitary force main within the pier trenches, sewerage ejector pump for the firehouse and fire boat, and unique structural system to raise the firehouse approximately one foot above the pier deck. The project required extensive planning and coordination with the FDNY and the various city agencies that are responsible for planning the public parkland and open spaces of the neighboring Homeport site.
